Childish Gambino’s Song “This is America“ Won 4 Grammys

At the 61st Grammy ceremony, the rapper and producer Childish Gambino received five nominations.The song ‘This Is America’ was the most significant surprise of the award festivities winning four of the most wanted trophies.

• The political anthem “This Is America” became the first rap song ever to win the Grammy award for song of the year. Additionally, this is Childish Gambino’s greatest music triumph, which established him as the first hip hop artist who won the Record and Song of the year.
• Furthermore, “This Is America” won the Record of the year 2019, for which Childish had to beat out the winner of the best performance of a pop duel, “Shallow” by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
• The song video “This Is America” won the Grammy trophy for Best Music Video of the year. The video is certainly a protest against racism, discrimination and mass shooting, which shocked the American Society. The music video directed by the producer Hiro Murai reached over 485 million views on YouTube as of February 2019.
• Finally, the last Grammy award of the evening won by “This is America but not least, is Best Rap/Sung Performance. This is America is a song collaboration between Childish and other rap artists like 21 Savage, Young Thug, and Quavo.

• This is America is the thirty-one song to début at number one on the Hot 100 chart. Is Childish Gambino’s first #1 and made him the 2nd Emmy Award-winning actor that topped the Hot 100 chart, first being Timberlake.

Childish Gambino tied with Kacey Musgraves for the most awarded music artists of Grammys 2019, with four trophies each. Among the honors won by the country singer and songwriter, ranks the Album of the year for her Golden Hour. Sadly the biggest winner, Gambino, who is also known as the actor Donald Glover did not attend the festivities. Moreover, he also declined The Recording Academy’s request to perform at the Grammy Awards. Everyone noticed the feud that’s going on between the Grammy Awards and the hip-hop artists. Could be this a statement against the snubs and missteps made over the years by the recording academy. However, he attended at pre-Grammys festivities in Los Angeles. Justin Simien, the filmmaker of “Dear White People,” went on Twitter to let us know that Gambino’s character in the song video reminds him of Jim Crow.

•  Created in the early 1800s, Jim Crow was a character played by white-painted faces, to tackle African-American jokes.
•  Besides, Jim Crow’s laws drawn attention to racial segregation in South America after the civil war.
