Katy Perry Compact Biography
► WHO IS KATY PERRY? ◄
Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, publicly known as Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter, and TV personality. Katy Perry was brought into the world on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California.
Raised in a profoundly religious family, and after singing in a church between the age of 9 and 17, Katy Perry chose to pursue a career in gospel music.
After signing with the Christian record label Red Hill in 2001, Perry recorded her debut album, a country gospel record titled “Katy Hudson” which was a commercial failure.
Seven years later, in 2008, Perry’s rise to fame started, with the release of her 2nd album, “One of the Boys,” and his lead single “I Kissed a Girl.”
- Due to Katy Perry’s 180-degree shift from gospel music into pop-rock, her second album has sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

Q&A With Katy Perry
Q: Which female artists inspire you?
Katy Perry: “I just listened to [Brooke’s] 10 Cent Wings from top to bottom. It gives me the same inspired feeling as the first time I listened to it. And I’m really into Bonnie Raitt right now. I listened to a couple of her records when I went to Asia for a few weeks. There was an opportunity to take a three-hour hike up this volcano. And the whole time I was hiking-starting on the mountaintop.. I was only listening to Bonnie.”
Q: What elements are essential to you as a songwriter?
Katy Perry: “Color. I love idioms and old sayings, puns and humor. I love language. I’m one of those people who is really interested in the definition of a word and its synonyms. Every day I’m asking everybody I’m hanging out with what something means and what it means to them. Even if it’s a word I’ve heard over and over. I’m a hoarder of words.”
Q: What have you learn from being involved in Hillary’s campaign?
Katy Perry: “I was so grateful for the experience of the election: to be able to find and test my voice. There was a lot of noise about me taking a stand because I was “neutral girl” for a while. I was okay when someone told me, “Oh, just shut up and sing.” I have a song on the record called “Bigger Than Me,” and I think the song talks about Hillary and the election and
something is happening that’s bigger than her.”
